I personally thought they were sort of avant garde. Beckie is always telling me how the women in Montreal are on the cutting edge of fashion, so why shouldn't the athletes also be fashion forward?
From the Vancouver 2010 Olympic site:
The Team Canada Beijing Games clothing line is proudly emblazoned with maple leaves, the word Canada written in both English and Mandarin, and uses a primarily red and white colour pallet. Colour inspiration is also drawn from the five elements of Chinese astrology — earth, wood, fire, water and metal — and on some pieces, Chinese symbolism takes the form of the lucky number eight, which, when repeated, makes an attractive pattern.
Like the Australian I think it is very cool to give a fashion nod to your host country. The Olympic team goes on to say, that the uniforms were designed with athlete comfort in mind, dry wicking fabrics, UV protection, four-way stretch and odor resistance. With all those features I think Steve should collect some gear for the men in the family! :) The uniforms were also made of eco-friendly fabrics. If you want to read the full article click here.

I actually thought the uniforms were pretty nice. The talk in Durham from staff who had participated in the past was that the uniforms were very weird. I was glad to see they were short sleeved and casual, not the sport jackets that others were wearing. They must have been dying in the heat!
