Here’s an update on the planter in our front yard. The picture below is from last November when we first redid the planter and planted some new flowers and buried a bunch of bulbs that we hoped would come up this spring. I don’t have a true “before” picture as it never occurred to me to take a picture of the planter full of dirt and weeds and sadness and despair.
The picture above is from today. As you can see it looks like our little planter experiment seems to have worked. (We also got some nice help from an unusually high amount of rainfall the past month and a half)
Getting the planter to a point where we had a fighting chance involved me digging out a ton of dirt and rocks, adding back new high quality soil, redoing and expanding the existing drippers, and adding micro-sprinklers. When we were finally ready to plant, Jessie went to the nursery and picked out all the flowers. She also was nice enough to park her car full of flowers in the driveway next to the planter, inform me that there were “more in the trunk”, and then disappear into the house for a few hours. Just kidding, Jes was a lot of help and great moral support!
We’re excited that the planter turned out so well. Previously people had suggested that we would be better off removing the whole thing, cementing it over and putting a fountain in, or pouring gasoline on it and lighting a match. We’ll see what this summer’s 110+ degree heat does to it, but so far so good.

Looks like lots of people have admired your flowers but have not made a comment. Great Job Matt & Jes, I saw the before, dry dirt, dismal planter with parasitic dodder in it. You have truly transformed it into a beautiful garden ! And this summer if it's too hot just put more mulch on it (maybe with some vinca) and it will look great.
Our garden here still has a little snow and a few crocus poking up.
Wow! I think you guys need to come here and make me a flower bed :)...I kill all our flowers every year though...the green thumb gene must not have been thrown my way :)
So pretty! Wanna come do our yard??
Great Job Matt! It looks so pretty. I can't wait to see the flowers and you and Jess in person next week! Better start moving your breakables that are three feet or lower...lol.
